Jim's Friends Helping Friends, an organization that helps area residents who are in need, will host its 10th annual kids fishing rodeo on Saturday on Still Lane off Williams Road in North Fort Myers.

The event is from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. with a $5 entry fee, which includes bait and trophies for all age groups up to 18 years old.

Jim Roberts, who runs the non-profit organization, said while it's not as big a fundraiser as the annual turkey shoot (which raised nearly $8,000 in November) it still serves as a way to get funding while giving children an opportunity to enjoy a relaxing day by the water.

"We started it as a way to bring out other people to help the organization. My friend suggested something involving fishing and I knew exactly what to do," Roberts said. "Every year it grows and brings in more people. It's more about getting people out and know what we do."

Among the things Jim's Friends do include giving families in need an opportunity to enjoy Christmas by giving them presents and a full meal and helping people with serious ailments like cancer meet their financial obligations at home.

Most recently, Jim's Friends, with the help of other organizations, organized a wing eating contest that raised $4,000 for a local man injured in a car accident. He also raised $850 at an event at Lawhon's for a woman in need of surgery.

This event is expected to raise about $500, Roberts said, with different people sponsoring trophies and the bait.

There will be food and drink sold, with homemade ice cream sponsored by Everglades Farm Equipment, as well as a raffle.

"It's a fun relaxing day. No stress and having fun. Fishing is for relaxing. That's all it is," Roberts said. "Come bring your pole.
