Many people eventually aquire their dream car.

Here in Southwest Florida, especially if you live in a 55-plus community - which t North Fort Myers has plenty of - that dream machine is likely to be much smaller.

So, if you can't have a '57 Chevy, maybe you can have a golf cart that looks like one.

A Custom Carts, at 18251 N. Tamiami Trail, can build it if you dream it. If you're going to have a golf cart, you might as well have fun with it.

The company has created so much fun, that it was named Best Golf Cart Store in the recent "Best of North Fort Myers" event sponsored by The Neighbor.

Owner Christopher Frick said he used to build classic cars before he moved to Florida from Michigan in 1987 and started working on golf carts in a way that would make him stand out from the rest.

"I worked for the lady who owned the golf cart company at first in 1997 and bought it from them in 2001," Frick said. "We do just about everything, from custom paint jobs to wheels, seat, we even make them fast."

Among the rides he has made include the '57 Chevy, a Studebaker, a Corvette, a '65 Mustang, truck and more. Yes, they make bodies for golf carts.

"We have a company that makes the bodies and do the plugmolds and we get the molds and do the paintwork and bodywork and put them on the golf cart," Frick said, adding that such exquisite work can run up to $20,000, as opposed to $5,000 for a standard cart.

Of course, Frick will work on standard carts, doing standard maintenance and repair work on tires in their self-contained shop.

They also have a great selection of spare parts for every golf cart. If they don't carry it, they can find it or even build it for you.

Frick said they work primarily with private customers and not huge golf courses like they used to.

"It just got too big so I downsized. I'm more personable with the private individual," Frick said. "We can focus on what they want."

Thus, being named "Best of."

"It quite cool. I've never entered anything in any type of competition. We just do what we do. Someone just nominated us. It's quite an honor," Frick said.

A Custom Carts is open from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday and from 8 a.m. to noon on Saturday.
