When it comes to Mexican food, the North Fort Myers area is a very competitive one, with several eateries that serve first-class food.

In the past 18 months, Las Brisas Restaurant, a family-owned restaurant at 136 Pondella Road, has joined the battle and has succeeded in not only bringing people in, but getting them to come back.

Betsy Barrueta, manager of Las Brisas and daughter of the owner, said the place opened last June in a building that former served as an accountant's office. Her father, Gabriel, had no problem renovating the place.

"My dad came in and gutted the whole building and built everything from scratch. He also owns a construction business, so this is his side job," said Barrueta, whose mother Esperanza, also works there.

While contractor and restaurateur is an unusual combination, this is the third restaurant they have owned, having had others in Fort Myers and Naples that they sold. They also owned another place in North Fort Myers that they sold more than a decade ago.

Those other restaurants succeeded, and so has this one. It has relied on a lot of work of mouth and well as people who saw the building under construction who wanted to try it out.

"We didn't do a lot of advertising in the beginning. We've just started some about a month ago to reach different people," Barrueta said. "We're a small business in the middle of North Fort Myers. Many of our recurring customers are locals. Season has an impact, but our main focus is locals."

Las Brisas makes their food fresh. From the tortillas to the taco shells to the guacamole, dishes are made from scratch. Many of their more traditional dishes, such as fajitas, chimichangas, enchiladas and quesadillas, run for $7 to $15, with daily specials on the menu as well.

Barrueta said the chile rellenos is a personal favorite, as well as the traditional favorites.

There are also daily lunch specials for as little as $5.50, and Happy Hour from 3 to 5 p.m. includes 99 cent tacos and $2.99 white-wine margaritas.

With all they have to offer, Barrueta said there's plenty of room for them at the table.

"There's a lot of competition, but at the end of the day, there are enough people around to share. Come see us," Barrueta said.

Las Brisas is open every day from 10:30 a.m. to 9 p.m. For more information, call 349-7911 or go to their Facebook page or their website at lasbrisasrestaurante.com.
