Cape man dies from gunshot injury police believe was self-inflicted

A Cape Coral man who sustained a gunshot wound at a local gun range Friday afternoon has died.

He has been identified as Ervin Rekic, 23, of Cape Coral.

Rekic was transported to a local hospital "after sustaining an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head" while at the Shoot Center gun range in Cape Coral, officials said.

"Detectives believe this to be a suicide based on the preliminary investigation, but an official determination will not be made until the conclusion of the investigation," a release from the Cape Coral Police Department states. The investigation is ongoing."

Cape police responded to Shoot Center at 1122 Del Prado Boulevard S. on the reported shooting at 1:45 p.m. Friday.

An injured man, later identified as Rekic, was transported to a local hospital with life-threatening injuries.

The Cape Coral Police Department sent detectives, forensics personnel and victim advocates to the center to begin its investigation.

A Ping4 alert was sent to the public notifying residents of heavy police activity in the area. The department also said there were no suspects at large and no danger to the public.
