North Fort Myers rebounds with win over East Lee
September 25, 2019

Homecoming was a great time to bounce back at North Fort Myers.

Shaking off a big loss to Fort Myers a week before, the Red Knights took out their frustrations on East Lee County in a 51-6 victory at Moody Field.

The Red Knights upped their season record to 4-1, 1-1 in District 6A-13, while dropping the Jaguars to 2-3, 0-2.

"We got punched in the mouth by Fort Myers," Red Knights' head coach Dwayne Mack said. "So the whole goal was, when you get punched in the mouth you've got to fight back. So the kids came out and fought hard."

North suffered what could be a big loss, however, when quarterback Aaron Cole went down in the third quarter. He ended up leaving Moody Field by ambulance with what appeared to be a lower leg injury.

Cole had runs of 8 and 9 yards for second-quarter touchdowns, and hit Daniel Pilgrim for an 18-yard scoring pass as well before having to leave the game.

"We're going to see what the X-rays have to say," Mack said. "He's in our hopes and prayers."

In a shining display of sportsmanship, first the Jaguars and then the Red Knights emptied the sidelines to come out and wish Cole well as he was being carted off to a waiting ambulance.

Parker O'Dell came in and hit Santino Arroyo with a 39-yard touchdown pass late in the third quarter.

"We tried to keep Parker very limited, because in the Fort Myers game he had to come out early," Mack said. "He went to the doc to make sure everything was okay, and he should be ready to go against Ida Baker."

The Red Knights extended their lead in the third quarter. Brett Reed ran in a touchdown from 9 yards out, and Arroyo added a 2-yard score.

East Lee got on the board in the third when Thailand Carey took a short Johnny Brown III pass and raced 55 yards to the end zone.

Reed, who earlier in the year was running the ball in a reserve capacity, was the workhorse on Friday. He finished the night with 121 yards and a rushing touchdown. He also kicked a 28-yard field goal and three extra points.

For a good part of the game, especially in the first half, the Red Knights were their own worst enemy. Penalties erased two Reed runs. Two North touchdowns were called back before Pilgrim scored. Two Red Knight passes were intercepted -- one on the Jaguars' 1 -- and a muffed punt gave East Lee County its only opportunity on the North side of the field.

However, all of that wound up causing little or no damage, since the North Fort Myers defense stopped East Lee County cold most of the night.

"The kids played hard with all the distractions of homecoming," Mack said. "I'm pretty sure they'll have a good time tomorrow. We get ready to play Ida Baker on Monday."

The Jaguars didn't help themselves much either, committing 16 penalties.

North set up two touchdowns with defensive plays. Junon Athime recovered a second-quarter fumble, setting up Pilgrim's touchdown catch. In the third quarter, it was Jeran Ford who got his hands on an East Lee fumble. That led to Reed's score.

Sammy Presmy, who had a second-quarter score negated by a penalty, got it back with a 20-yard run in the fourth to end the night's scoring.

"We know that next week we've got a in-zone meeting with Ida Baker, who's pretty tough," Mack said.
